Do Female Genital Warts Cause Cancer?

Genital warts in women do not turn into cancer, although cancer of the cervix can be caused by certain strains of HPV. Because cervical cancer has no symptoms until it reaches advanced stages, it is important for women to undergo routine and regular screenings to detect it. HPV warts can uncommonly be related to cancers of the vagina, anus, penis and vulva. Estimates from the American Cancer Society hold that over 11,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States in the year 2008. Other HPV-related cancers are estimated to take additional lives, including: vulvar cancer (3,460), vaginal and other female genital cancers (2,210), penile and other male genital cancers (1,250), and anal cancer in (3,050) women as well as (2,020) men. Those populations at increased risk for HPV-related cancer are gay men, bisexual men, and individuals with suppressed immune systems, such as those who are battling HIV or AIDS.
