Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). Genital warts are caused by certain strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Although condoms can help to lower the risk of exposure to HPV, the virus can also infect areas that are not covered by a condom. Abstinence (the avoidance of all sexual activity) is the only way to totally ensure that the disease is not contracted. Being in a monogamous relationship with a person who has had a limited number of sexual partners is a way to lower the chance of being infected with HPV.

There are medications available to suppress genital wart outbreaks. There are also surgical methods for removing the warts. A vaccine was released in 2006 that helps guard against the dangerous strains of HPV that cause infection. It can be administered to girls as young as eleven years of age. It is important to remember that although genital warts can be treated, the virus (HPV) that causes them is said to never be eliminated. Warts may reappear after treatment – even years later – without new exposure to HPV.
