The HPV infection that causes genital warts is passed through contact with the genitals during either vaginal or anal sex with an infected person. There is also a risk of genital warts transmission by hands because they can be spread through touching or hand contact and care should be taken to not touch the genital area where warts are present. Asymptomatic people may unknowingly pass the virus to sexual partners. Rarely, infected pregnant women pass the disease to their baby during vaginal delivery.

Genital warts in women do not turn into cancer, although cancer of the cervix can be caused by certain strains of HPV. Because cervical cancer has no symptoms until it reaches advanced stages, it is important for women to undergo routine and regular screenings to detect it. HPV warts can uncommonly be related to cancers of the vagina, anus, penis and vulva. Estimates from the American Cancer Society hold that over 11,000 women will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States in the year 2008. Other HPV-related cancers are estimated to take additional lives, including: vulvar cancer (3,460), vaginal and other female genital cancers (2,210), penile and other male genital cancers (1,250), and anal cancer in (3,050) women as well as (2,020) men. Those populations at increased risk for HPV-related cancer are gay men, bisexual men, and individuals with suppressed immune systems, such as those who are battling HIV or AIDS.

When you suspect that you might have genital warts, you want to know what genital warts look like. Genital warts are small bumps or clusters of bumps that present themselves in the genital region. They sometimes appear to be cauliflower shaped. They can be found on the vulva, in or around the vagina and/or anus, on the cervix, penis, scrotum, thigh, and groin. Although warts may be revealed within weeks after sexual contact with someone who is infected, some people who are infected may experience no warts at all. Untreated, genital warts may increase in size or in number, remain unchanged, or even go away altogether.
