Can Genital Warts be prevented?
Genital warts are the most common sexually transmitted disease (STD). Genital warts are caused by certain strains of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Although condoms can help to lower the risk of exposure to HPV, the virus can also infect areas that are not covered by a condom. Abstinence (the avoidance of all sexual activity) is the only way to totally ensure that the disease is not contracted. Being in a monogamous relationship with a person who has had a limited number of sexual partners is a way to lower the chance of being infected with HPV.
